What is the closest any object has gotten to the sun?

The sun-grazing comet C/2024 S1 Atlas passed within roughly 850,000 kilometers of the solar surface on October 28, 2024, before largely vaporizing. That is far closer than Mercury, which never gets nearer than about 46 million kilometers.
