Chinese AI Developers Lag Anthropic on Profit Margins, Filing Shows

Anthropic's IPO filing shows a profit margin far above Chinese AI rivals Z.ai and MiniMax.

Key points

  • Anthropic reported a gross profit margin of 85.4 per cent in the first half of 2026.
  • Z.ai and MiniMax reported gross margins of 26.4 per cent and 17.9 per cent for the same period.
  • Z.ai and MiniMax Hong Kong shares slid about 13 per cent and 2 per cent since the filing.

Why it matters. The gap may make it harder for Chinese AI developers to fund frontier research from gross profit, according to analyst Poe Zhao, who said capital markets currently pay for the gap.

Anthropic's IPO prospectus, filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission last week, reports a first-half 2026 gross margin of 85.4 per cent, against 26.4 per cent for Z.ai and 17.9 per cent for MiniMax. Anthropic booked US$16.3 billion in revenue in the first six months, versus US$141 million for Z.ai and US$116.6 million for MiniMax. HSBC analysts Ritchie Sun, Charlene Liu and Wang Peishan said Anthropic earned US$2.08 per US dollar of computing spend in the second quarter, against 46 US cents for Z.ai.
