What’s in Budget 2026 for Canadian tech?
Federal budget commits 500 MW of AI compute for Canadian companies and plans to merge BDC and EDC.
Key points
- The federal government committed to supplying 500 MW worth of compute for Canadian companies.
- The budget plans to merge BDC and EDC under a single federal development bank.
- The SR&ED expansion receives $930 million over five years to cover commercialization expenses.
Why it matters. The planned merger of BDC and EDC and new tax incentives change the tools available to Canadian companies seeking growth funding.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said on Thursday the federal government will supply 500 MW of compute to Canadian companies. The budget also plans to merge BDC and EDC, and a new Canada Growth Incentive would offer a tax exemption on up to $15 million in capital gains from 2027-28. CFIB president Dan Kelly called it appalling that the government hasn't fixed failing tariff relief measures a year and a half into the trade war.
