‘Part of the city’s DNA’: Former BioWare writer reflects on company's impact on Edmonton

Updated 1 min read

Electronic Arts is closing BioWare’s Edmonton studio as part of a restructuring that cuts about three percent of its workforce. The developer launched in 1995 and created franchises including Mass Effect, Baldur’s Gate, Anthem and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. EA acquired the independent studio in 2008. Former senior writer Ben Gelinas says the closure ends a company that trained a generation of local developers and shaped Edmonton’s wider tech community. He adds that many current city studios trace their staff and skills directly back to BioWare. The move reflects a broader industry shift away from massive blockbuster projects toward smaller and online development.
