Key points

  • Canva says 1,271 people are affected by the restructure, which focuses on collapsing layers and bringing more teams together in person.
  • Departing staff will receive at least six months of salary and keep healthcare for a further 12 months where workers receive that benefit.
  • Canva did not mention AI in its restructure announcement, unlike Atlassian, Block and WiseTech, which have also cut jobs.

Why it matters. The restructure adds to a wave of job cuts across the technology sector, as software companies compete with cheaper AI disrupters while adopting AI tools themselves.

Canva is cutting or relocating more than 1,000 jobs, as chief executive Melanie Perkins announced in a staff email on Wednesday. The company says 1,271 people are affected, and the cuts represent 22% of its global workforce. Departing staff will get at least six months of salary and can apply for US$10,000 (A$14,000) grants to start their own ventures.
