US bans Chinese AI firm DeepSeek from federal agency IT systems
The United States has banned Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek's products from federal civilian agency IT systems, according to a Department of Homeland Security memo made public on Monday. The July memo instructed agencies to remove DeepSeek and its affiliated products, as well as third-party products and services incorporating the technology, from government networks. The DHS also directed agencies to monitor traffic flows in and out of government websites to address potential security concerns. China responded on Tuesday, criticising the ban and highlighting friction in the technology race between the two AI powers. The move follows broader US restrictions on Chinese technology firms over data security and national security concerns.
