IFL 2026-27 season to begin October 16 with new foreign player rules

The Indian Football League (IFL) 2026-27 season will commence on October 16, with new rules limiting clubs to three foreign players in the starting XI. The Governing Council announced the changes after a meeting on July 27, aiming to boost local talent development. The season will feature 12 teams, with the foreign player cap applying to all matches. Additionally, the council approved a ₹5 crore youth development fund to support academies across the country. The IFL had previously allowed five foreign players per match. The new rules align with India’s broader push to strengthen domestic football ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
