Supreme Court Warns Against Lathi-Charge Without Reason

The Supreme Court has orally observed that lathi-charge cannot be launched merely because of agitation. The top court was hearing a batch of petitions regarding alleged use of excessive force on protesters during the recent wave of student protests across the country. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, made the observation. The court is considering a probe into the incidents of July 20, when the protesting students' Sansad Chalo march to Parliament was met with use of tear gas and batons.
