We take a tour of HPE’s Technology Renewal Centre to see how old tech is getting a second life

Updated 2 min read

A Hewlett Packard Enterprise facility near Glasgow Airport is giving retired business technology a second life instead of sending it to landfill. The Erskine Technology Renewal Centre processes roughly 150,000 assets each month, with 85 percent of servers and 97 percent of workstations sanitised, tested and prepared for resale on site. Across its Erskine and Andover, Massachusetts locations, HPE says 84 percent of returned equipment is refurbished for active use, while the rest is responsibly recycled. The company estimates the programme has kept more than 8.4 million kilograms of electronic waste out of landfill, equal to the annual e-waste produced by over one million people. For business buyers, the operation feeds HPE Financial Services, which offers a loan plan with no payments for 90 days and nine months at one percent interest. The centre also securely erases data, having overwritten about 1.6 million drives and sanitised 1.7 exabytes of information before any device is resold.
