'Too big to not fail': Google outage exposes UK reliance on a handful of cloud providers
Google Cloud resolved a UK outage that hit banks and courts.
A Google Cloud datacentre failure in London disrupted banking apps, court hearings and the NHS app on Tuesday. The incident struck the company’s europe-west2-b zone after a power event at a third-party facility. Downdetector reports showed problems at Royal Mail, Revolut, HSBC and Lloyds, with disruption peaking around 9 a.m. before services began recovering by mid-afternoon. Revolut said customer money and data remained safe, while HM Courts and Tribunal Service confirmed its Cloud Video Platform was affected. The outage again exposed how much of British daily life depends on a few large cloud providers, with up to 60 percent of UK government infrastructure hosted on Amazon, Microsoft and Google. Google said services have been restored and promised a full incident analysis on its public status dashboard.

Revolut was among the hardest hit, with customers unable to make payments or access funds in its app, while Lloyds Bank also experienced disruption. The Register reported that a parcel firm and property websites were also affected. Recovery was initially expected by 1300 UTC, and Google later confirmed the issue had been resolved.
