Oura Ring can track new stats related to cardio fitness

Updated 2 min read

Smart ring maker Oura is adding two new fitness features that bring its wearable closer to watch-style trackers. The first is Cardio Effort, a personalized strain score that sorts weekly activity into five ranges from light to reaching, based on the wearer’s own baseline. The second is automatic VO2 Max estimation, which previously required a six-minute walking test and was called Cardio Capacity in the company’s Oura Labs tool. Now the ring passively calculates the metric during regular GPS-enabled workouts, removing the extra step for users. The features roll out to the third-generation Oura Ring and later models, with VO2 Max available first in Oura Labs. For everyday users, the change means ring wearers can monitor long-term cardiovascular trends without switching to a watch or chest strap. Oura says the Cardio Effort feature uses the Training Impulse method to track fitness changes over time rather than judging a single workout.
