Spotify says yes, it is busting people for using Family Plan sharing too widely
Spotify is enforcing a new check on its discounted Family and Duo plans, requiring members to scan a QR code from the plan manager’s phone to prove they live in the same household. Co-CEO Alex Norström confirmed the move on an earnings call, describing it as a routine improvement to verification rather than a one-time crackdown. The code refreshes every few seconds, and anyone who fails to scan it within a seven-day window is blocked from joining another Family or Duo plan for twelve months. The change directly affects subscribers who share a plan with friends or relatives outside one home, since they now risk losing the lower per-person price and may need to pay for individual accounts. Spotify says the Family plan has existed for roughly twelve or thirteen years and makes up a significant share of its subscriber base, so the company plans to keep refining verification over time with no set end date. For ordinary users, the practical impact is a stricter sign-up process and a potential jump in monthly cost if their shared plan no longer qualifies.
Spotify is busting free of CarPlay with the launch of its first native car app
Spotify has launched its first fully native in-car app built directly on Google’s Android Automotive operating system, starting Wednesday in select Audi models including the electric A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron as well as the gas-powered A5, Q5, and A6. The standalone app runs on the vehicle’s own infotainment hardware, removing the need for phone tethering, Bluetooth connections, or cables. Spotify says it now draws every pixel of the interface itself rather than using Google’s standard templates, giving the company full control over the user experience. For drivers, that means no waiting for a phone to connect or a screen to boot on a cold morning. Passengers can scan a QR code to join a shared listening queue, and on vehicles with a secondary display they can browse lyrics or watch video without distracting the driver. Spotify says it remains heavily invested in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the new app gives owners of compatible Audi vehicles a direct alternative that bypasses the phone entirely.
Spotify’s new podcast memberships let you pay for extra perks
Spotify is rolling out a new Memberships feature in 34 regions that lets podcast creators sell paid access to bonus episodes, early releases, and reduced ads directly on the platform. Listeners can subscribe, pay, and unlock those benefits in just a few taps from a show’s page. Creators keep 90 percent of membership revenue and can set their own pricing tiers, bundle perks, and offer free trials or member badges. To qualify, a show must be hosted on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone and have at least 100 listeners or viewers, 100 consumption hours, and three published episodes. For an ordinary listener, this means some favorite shows may now put extra content behind a monthly paywall, similar to supporting a creator on Patreon. Spotify says podcasters can run Memberships alongside ads and its Partner Program, and creators using other subscription services can bring their paywalled content over through Open Access.
