US job openings jump to 7.52 million in September

Updated 2 min read

U.S. employers ramped up job postings in September, with openings jumping to 7.5 million from a revised 7.19 million in August, according to the Labor Department. It is the largest number of openings since May and up from a recent low of 6.9 million in March. Hiring rose by 131,000 to 5.4 million, while layoffs fell to 1.64 million, the lowest since March 2025. Quits also climbed to 3.37 million, the highest in about 18 months, which economists often read as a sign that workers feel confident about finding new jobs. Job openings now exceed the number of unemployed people, a sharp reversal from a year ago. Economists caution that the trend must continue for several months before it signals a real improvement, since hiring has been sluggish for nearly three years. The October jobs report is due Friday, and forecasters expect employers to have added about 65,000 positions, up from 29,000 in September.
